Check the actual output size instead of assuming every conversion will make a file smaller.

Questions, answered.

Why did the compressed image get larger?

Your original may already be well optimized, or the selected format may be a poor fit. A photo exported as PNG can be larger than its JPEG source. Compare outputs and keep the original when it is better.

Why does the quality slider have little effect on PNG?

PNG export uses lossless compression and does not use the JPEG/WebP quality control in the same way. To reduce a PNG substantially, consider smaller pixel dimensions or WebP if the destination supports it.

What happens to transparency when I choose JPEG?

JPEG cannot store a transparent background. This tool fills transparent areas with white for JPEG output. Choose PNG or WebP if transparency is part of the design.

Will metadata or animation be preserved?

Animated files are not supported. The tool creates a new still image through the browser’s image pipeline; original metadata, color profiles or camera details may be omitted or changed.

Can I guarantee a file under a particular size?

No single quality value guarantees a target byte size for every image. Lower the quality gradually, or use the resizer to reduce pixel dimensions, then check the actual exported size.
